Common Chiropractic Questions & Answers

The information provided is Critically important in order to understand how and why Chiropractic care enhances the body's ability to heal itself.  So go over these questions and if there are any other questions that come about, feel free to contact us.

1. How does chiropractic work?
Chiropractic works because it addresses your nervous system.  Our nervous system controls our body and its ability to heal and regulate.  Millions of instructions flow from your brain, down the spinal cord, and out to every organ and tissue. Signals sent back to the brain confirm if your body is working properly. Misalignments of the spine called "subluxations" create detrimental pressure upon the nerves and spinal cord, which interferes with the communication of life instructions to and from the brain.  Subluxations often result in discomfort, pain, and a decrease in overall health and function.  Specific spinal adjustments can help improve brain/body communications, decrease pain and discomfort and restore overall function and health.

2. Do I have a pinched nerve?
A pinched nerve is a rare situation. More common are the presence of "subluxations".  Subluxations create an interference of the nerve messages between the brain and body.  Subluxations develop over time from stress' encountered daily and results in discomfort, pain and decreases overall health and the body's ability to function optimally.

3. How do you get subluxations?
Subluxations are caused by STRESS.  There are three basic types of stress that cause subluxations. Physical stress include traumas, slips and falls, accidents, occupational posture, repetitive motions and improper sleeping positions.  Emotional stress, such as anxiety, grief, anger and fear can cause subluxations. Chemical stress include excess alcohol intake, drugs, pharmaceutical drugs, pollution and poor nutrition.  In effect, everyone will experience subluxations throughout life.

4. How do I know if I have a subluxation?
Many subluxations may be present without any symptoms. Like the early stages of tooth decay or cancer, subluxations can be present before warning signs appear. A thorough Chiropractic examination can show the location and severity of subluxations you may have.

5. Can subluxations clear up on their own?
Sometimes. Fortunately, our bodies have the ability to self-correct many of these problems as we stretch and move our bodies. Subluxations are areas of the spine that are "stuck" and "locked" in an improper position, which the body cannot correct itself.  When the stress' upon the body become overwhelming and subluxations don’t resolve, you need to see a doctor of chiropractic, who specializes in detection and correction of subluxations!

6. What’s an adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustments involve a gentle, hands-on technique that helps to restore the alignment and motion to spinal joints that aren’t moving properly.  Adjustments are specialized and specific for each person. The chiropractic adjustment is a safe and effective way of correcting misalignments to restore nervous system function and living pain-free.

7. Will adjustments make my spine too loose?
No. Only the spinal joints that are "misaligned" or subluxated receive adjustments. This allows weakened muscles and ligaments to stabilize and heal.  The chiropractic adjustment is specific and specialized. It has the right amount of energy, delivered to an exact spot, at a precise angle, at just the right time. The intent is to get a "stuck" spinal joint moving again, helping to reduce nerve interference. Years of training, practice and experience make chiropractic adjustments specific and safe.

8. What makes the sound during the adjustment?
Lubricating fluids separate the bones of each spinal joint. Some adjusting methods can produce a sound when the gas and fluids pressure releases. It’s much like opening a bottle of champagne or removing a suction cup. The sound is interesting, but isn’t a guide to the quality or value of the adjustment.  Also, calling the adjustment, the “crack”, is incorrect.  What’s performed is “the adjustment” and the sound that it produces is “the audible”.

9. Can I adjust myself?
No. Some people try and can make their joints "pop" but that’s not an adjustment! Damage can occur by mobilizing a joint with weakened muscles and ligaments. Ligaments hold the bones together and have an elastic property, which is the same as a rubberband.  Trying to "pop" a joint over and over will stretch out and weaken the ligament (like stretching out a rubberband) making the joint unstable.  Future problems may occur with the unstable ligaments and joint.

Adjustments are specialized and take years to master. Even your chiropractic doctor must consult a colleague to benefit from chiropractic care.

10. How long until I’ll feel better?
The healing process is just that, a process.  It takes time and repetition for the body to heal itself.  Some patients experience almost instant relief. Others discover it can take many weeks or months. Many factors can affect the healing process. How long have you had your problem? Are you keeping your appointments? Are you getting the proper rest, exercise and nutrition? Do you smoke? Are you in otherwise good condition? Within a short period of time most patients sense enough progress to fully complete their doctor’s recommendations.
